Getting married at the Minneapolis Institute of Art is rooted in love, history, and community. For me, art museums have always been a place of discovery and peace. They are spaces that enrich your lives whether you go in solitude or decide to share the experience of looking at art with loved ones.
One of my favorite stories of all time comes from Pliny the Elder as he shares the origin of art as a love story. Dibutades of Corinth traced her lover’s shadow on a wall before he departed for war. Her father later pressed clay within the outline to cast a relief to harden in his kiln.
I have always found it beautifully symbolic that the birth of art comes from the intensity of emotions that love brings. Dibutades attempts to capture and preserve this love through art, in a similar way to wedding photography. Love is fleeting, it’s ephemeral. We attempt to hold onto it as long as possible through a means that is permanent. . . art.
When you are married at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, you are surrounded by brush strokes, beadwork, and sculptures that stand strong. All are rooted in history that has stood the test of time. Your wedding day becomes as much of the art’s story, as it is now yours.
Caroline and Chris embodied just that on their wedding day. They said their “I do’s” in front of The Archangel Michael (by Cavalier d’Arpino), they surrounded themselves with loved ones who traveled far, and held hands on the dance floor until the midnight sky. These two even “wowed” their audience during their choreographic first dance and when Chris performed with his accordion.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art is one of my favorite locations for photography. There seem to be endless possibilities not only inside the museum itself but also in the Japanese-style courtyard. And of course, there is the grand staircase as well—it is the perfect location for wedding-party and family photos.
It was truly an honor to be a part of Caroline’s and Chris’ luxury wedding at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Rooted in love, rooted in history, and rooted in community. There is no end to Dibutatdes’ traced outline as the centuries of love in art endure.
